Desert Manna USDA Surplus Food Commodities Distribution USDA Surplus Food Commodities distribution dates for residents of Barstow, Hinkley, and Lenwood will be Thursday through Sept. 23 from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 pm. The commodities can be picked up at the First Congregational UCC Church, 220 N. 2nd Ave.
You must be low-income to qualify for commodities. Please bring your ID with you. Volunteers are always needed to help distribute commodities, emergency food boxes, and serve lunch to the public at Desert Manna. Community 9/11 Dedication Ceremony Planned at Barstow Community College

The Associated Student Body (ASB) of Barstow Community College invites the public to attend a dedication ceremony Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010 in remembrance of the World Trade Center attacks. The occasion marks the ninth anniversary of the tragic September 11 World Trade Center attack in NYC. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. in the college amphitheater with an invocation by Lt. Allen Presser, U.S. Marine Corps chaplain. Dr. Thom Armstrong, president of BCC, will give the welcome followed by remarks from Dr. Ted Baca, president of the Board of Trustees. Additional program participants include the Barstow Fire Protection District, the Barstow Police Department, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), MCLB, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department- Barstow Station, and the National Training Center Ft. Irwin. The Barstow High School Marching Band will be on hand to perform “Grand Old Flag” to mark the memorial occasion.
ASB will unveil a memorial flag on campus honoring all those that risk their lives in service to their country. The culmination of the program will be the “Last Alarm” ceremony performed by the Barstow Fire Protection District, and a flyover by the California Highway Patrol.For additional information, please call (760) 252-2411, ext. 7374.

Economic futures are still cloudy in California but some experts maintain that there are signs of recovery from the current financial crisis. What form will recovery take and how long will it be before rel estate values rise woking again? Answers to these and other economic forecast questions will be presented at the 11th High Desert Economic Summit, slated for September 17, 2010, from 7am-1pm, at the Victor Valley College Performing Arts Center.
Keynote speaker for this session is Dr. Mark Schniepp, director of the California Economic Forecast. Guest speakers include Larry Kosmont, President of Kosmont Associates, Dr. John Husing of Economics & Politics, LLc. San Bernardino County Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt and representatives from the City of Adelanto, Barstow, Hesperia and the Town of Apple Valley will also present information.
Schniepp currently directs the California Economic Forecast, a company based in Santa Barbara. He prepares economic analyses for various California counties, Cal Trans, Kaiser Permanente, the California Association of Realtors and Southern California Association of Governments. "The economic recovery is still on course," Schniepp explained in latest edition of California Economic Forecast. "Though the stock market continues to correct, no Bear market is expected this year... The media's commentary on the loss of economic momentum is overstated." Schiepp will share more in depth knowledge and forecasts at the September symposium.
Larry Kosmont, of Kosmont Associates is a respected real estate and economic development consultant. Dr. John Husing is an expert on economic trends in the Inland Empire.

Conference participants will be able to glean knowledge from these leading experts as well as updates from High Desert Cities and County officials.

Tickets to the Summit are now available. Ticket prices include continental breakfast and lunch. General admissionis $65; Non-Profit admission is $45; Senior admission is $35. Barstow College Foundation Annual BBQ Fundraiser

Tickets are now on sale for the Barstow College Foundation’s barbecue. This fun, casual event is scheduled for Sept. 18 from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Barstow Community College Quad. Drawing tickets are $200 and include two meals. Only 150 drawing tickets will be sold. Meal tickets are also available for $10 for adults or $5 for children. The purchase of a drawing ticket is not required for entry into the event.
New sponsorship packages, designed to help businesses advertise to the more than 200 people who typically attend, are available this year. Table sponsorships, which include a drawing ticket are available for $500, while banner sponsorships cost $300.
If you want to purchase tickets or learn more about sponsorship opportunities, please call Sue Jones at (760) 953-6940. All proceeds from the barbecue will support the work of the Barstow College Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Barstow Community College and its students.
